Fungi Singing Sessions Snapshot
This is a practice of Somatic Mycology- We gather information through the body, building relationships with species of fungi, specifically through the voice.
Studying one species per session, first, we dive into the physical qualities, learning where it comes from, how it behaves, and it’s fundamental properties- medicinal and esoteric. I also share my double extract tincture of the species, inviting us to imbibe in it’s (non-psychoactive) medicine.
Next we warm up our voices together through strength building vocal exercises, many of which sound like wild animal calls.
Next, I teach us a song that I have pre-channeled from the species with harmonies and competing rhythms via call and response.
Finally, and most importantly, we invite the species that we’ve studied to sing us in the moment, using a guided mediation that turns into collective mycelial song, affirming this newly created human fungal bond.

Split-Gill Singing Session

No singing experience necessary!

Sunday May 21st
8-10pm
at Earthspace PDX
4135 SE Gladstone St.
You are invited to channel the song of Split-gill through your voice. Together we will explore the medicinal and esoteric qualities of the organism Schizophyllum commune (Split-gill), before practicing voice strengthening exercises, and finally channeling it’s song in a flowing fungi singing jam session.
Split-Gill: Schizophyllum commune
Beginning the Gemini Season, on the evening of May 21st, we will study this most abundant of mushrooms.
For this season of being expressive, social, and connecting with community, we will study a species with 28,000 different mating types. Split-Gill knows how to connect and exchange a vast variety of genetic information.
It’s medicine is excellent to take in preparation for large social engagements, helping you thrive in the uncertainly of forming new connections in community. Split-Gill supports the body’s ability to heal itself, and it’s known to have antimicrobial, antitumor and anticancer properties.
Split-gill helps us sit with the “both, and”, the ever-present contradictions of life. It helps us accept what is and treat ourselves with compassion and respect, while staying inspired to keep moving and growing.
It also invites us to use our tenacity in difficult times: by curling up, shriveling up and maybe even splitting and breaking if the harsh conditions call for it. But keep living with hope and trust that no matter how dry things get, the water is on its way.
Fungi Singing Session Agenda
Mind
We start with learning about the Fungi beginning with its personality- it’s ideal habitat, relationships with other beings, it’s medicine, and any unique characteristics about how it grows or what it does. Then we move on to the mushroom’s symbolic, esoteric and archetypal qualities, getting to know the entity metaphysically.
Body
After preparing our mind, we move on to preparing our body instruments starting with our voice. Warm ups include a variety of strength building vocal exercises, some mimicking wild animal sounds combined with simple scales.
Spirit
This last part is a most exciting practice- one of listening. We are invited to listen to the sound and song of the being we’ve studied. The song already exists in the ethereal, it’s already written, but it’s waiting and wanting to be born through you, specifically through your voice. You are not the creator of this song, so your most important and difficult task is to get out of the way, and allow it’s vibrations to move through you.
Part of setting the container for this workshop is making an agreement that we do our best to set aside harsh judgements of our own and others voices. When the judgements arise, we let them pass and keep listening. The relieving part is that since it’s not your song, you don’t have to worry about if it sounds good or beautiful enough, you are simply a channel.
Recordings welcome. We will continue singing until the energy of the mushroom shifts. It could call for a stop and restart or an unending flow of mushroom voice jam.
Why Fungi Singing?
Somatic Mycology
Singing is one of the most powerful and vulnerable forms of expression, therefore many of us have developed blocks around our voice. The medicine of Fungi can help us move in a natural, sustainable, way through vocal blockages.
Fungi ruled by the moon, represent the dark feminine qualities of death and rebirth, decomposition, renewed cycles, and strengthens the immunity of forests.
Hosting Fungi Singing Sessions has been a rewarding way to bring this unique form of healing, and somatic study of fungi to my community. Each session focuses on one species at a time to help us connect to the unique qualities of fungi in an approachable introductory way. I choose mushrooms that have well established human relationships. These intimate and embodied human-fungal relationships help us integrate, connect and heal.
